Yes, it's true. It takes a loving family and a host of best friends to pull off a Surprise Birthday Celebration. Joyce Frazier and daughters, Diana and Mona, did just that; pulled off the perfect birthday surprise. It all started with love; love for a person who is dedicated to his God, his family and his friends. So the story goes, the wheels were set in motion once the invitations were received and with the words 60 and surprise being the main focus. The party was held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Enoch D. Davis Center.
Joyce and daughters left the house early Saturday morning setup for the party. The plot thickens as guest arrived and she placed a call to Alvin to come to the Enoch D. Davis Center because her car had stopped on her. Bless Alvin's heart being the dutiful person that he is, he looked for his pliers and told her he was going to stop by and get the their mechanic to come with because he knew he couldn't fix it. Leaving no stone unturned, Joyce had clued in the mechanic and he gave Alvin a few tools and told him to go ahead of him and he would be there later.
Upon arrival at the center, Joyce goes out to tell Alvin about the car and invites him into the auditorium where friends and family awaited his arrival. When he entered the door, their were shouts of love - Surprise - Happy Birthday Alvin! Alvin was truly surprised and it showed. It was one of life's most precious moments. A moment in time that will last a life time. Alvin did say that all he could think about on the trip down to the center, was whether or not he would have to buy Joyce a new car. After this event who knows, she certainly will deserve one (editoral rights statement, LOL)
The colors were red, black and white. The family wore red t-shirts with Alvin's picture imprinted on them and Joyce had a special red/black blouse with accessories to match. Alvin to had a special shirt as the birthday guest. The guest feasted on southern soul food: bar-b-que chicken and ribs (the guest of honor grilled it and didn't know it was for his party, he was doing the wife a favor, imagine that), country collard greens, spicy potato salad, green beans, creamy mac and cheese, corn muffins and corn bread and other delicious entrees. Alvin had a special birthday cake with his image on it that was velvety scrumptious.
The tables were decked out in red and black tablecloths with coordinating plastic ware. A lot of thought was given to the successful planning of this event for a most deserving guest of honor. Friends from the Class of '68 shared in the joy along with other friends that Alvin has reached out and touched through out the years. Alvin took the floor and thanked everyone for their attendance and the love displayed on this spectacular day that he celebrated turning 60!
